Julia Earrings

€343,95

These simple dome earrings are bold, elegant and timeless, and feature the characteristic Roman hook, at the back. They are based on a Roman example from the first century AD.

"Julia" was a very common name, in Roman times, the female patronymic form of the name Julius. The gens Julia was one of the oldest patrician families in Rome, with many prominent members rising to elite political offices. The family of course would be best known for Julius Caesar, who would die in 44 BC at the end of the Republic. Caesar liked to tie his family line all the way back to the goddess Venus, and thus stress the fact that they (and he) were descendants of a divinity.

Julius Caesar had two sisters, Julia the Elder and Julia the Younger (who lived from 101 to 51 BC), and it was the latter who would become the maternal grandmother of the future leader Augustus.
