This luxurious piece is an ornate version of a hair spiral, with a wide body and decorative ribs along the length, as well as rounded terminations. It is based on a sixth century BC Etruscan example now housed in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, in New York City.
A large series of small gold spirals have been found in excavations, across ancient cultures. These, we believe, were used for tying back and keeping hair together in the equivalent of our pony tails. Putting the mass of hair into the spiral would be the challenge, but once done, the spiral would have held very well, and it would have been an incredibly special type of adornment, visually. We have revived this tradition with our elaborate series of hair spirals, and are thrilled to bring them to you!
In putting these on, small sections of hair may be entered into the spiral at a time, until the entire large mass of hair is securely held inside. Alternatively, different sections of hair may be "woven" into the different spiral sections (as we do when creating French braids, today), which would also secure the spiral into place. Or, finally, an elastic hair band may be used to first make a ponytail, after which our hair spiral may be led up the ponytail to cover the hair band, at which point the hair band may be left in place or removed.
“Berytus” was the ancient Roman name of the city of Beirut, in Lebanon. It was a city that had been Phoenician (“Biruta”), and then Hellenistic Greek, before becoming a Roman colony in 14 BC, and soon becoming the center of Roman presence in the eastern Mediterranean. Its extraordinary importance within the Roman world was its law school, valued as one of the three most important as early as the third century AD and leading to the city’s motto, Berytus Nutrix Legum (“Berytus, Mother of Laws”). "Berytus" was the divine personification of the city of Beirut.
