Briseis Ankle Bracelet
The Romans wore bands of gold around their ankles, and their upper arms! This slender ankle bracelet is delicate and charming, with a dangle in the form of an ivy leaf. It is inspired by a beautiful dancing female figure in a first century AD wall painting in the ancient city of Pompeii.
Briseis is the captivating character in Homer's Iliad who was at the heart of the feud between Agamemnon and Achilles. She was the love and prize of Achilles, and when he was forced to give her to Agamemnon, he refused to return to battle. According to Homer, Briseis had a beauty "like golden Aphrodite," like a goddess" (Il. 19.276).
