Pontus Pendant

$425.00

This distinctive pendant features a shape that is strikingly modern in design, and is based on a fifth century BC example from Cyprus. Here, a prominent and gorgeously ribbed, thick bail attaches onto a gently curved frame that terminates in two ivy leaves which cradle a beautiful cabochon stone in a bezel setting.

"Pontus," which means "sea," was the ancient Roman province located in the area of modern Turkey (specifically the northern shores along the Black Sea), officially annexed into the Roman lands in 63 BC. It was here, after the Battle of Zela in 47 BC, when Julius Caesar described his quick and decisive victory with the now immortal words, "Veni, vidi, vici" or "I came, I saw, I conquered." - Plutarch, Caesar 50

Our pendant may also be purchased along with one of our 20" Italian gold or silver chains, available here.
