Hecate was a mysterious divinity. In Greek myth, she was the goddess of the night, moon, herbalism, ghosts, and necromancy, among other things, and is most often shown holding a pair of torches, a key, or snakes (her divine attributes). Small statues or symbolic representations of the goddess were very popular, especially in Athens, where they stood in front of houses, gates, boundaries, and at the intersection of roads. As such, she symbolized the gateway or the space between the mortal and divine realms, life and death, and the guardian of doors and portals.
